The AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarship is available to children of AK Steel Employees. A REQUIRED preliminary application must be filled out and mailed in, postmarked by December 31. This application is first made available sometime in September. We will send email confirmation of receipt. Please confirm immediately at that time that your email is correct. Sometime in mid-January, once employment has been verified by AK Steel based on this first application, all applicants will be notified of status via email. Students who are considered semi-finalists will be sent a code and invited to fill out the online application, others will be thanked for their submission.  It is extremely important that you give a valid email that you check regularly. Some of our emails come from the generic email address and are identified by some servers as “Junk mail” and “Clutter” mail, so be sure to check these regularly as well. Click here for a printable version of the first, mail-in application: AK STEEL FIRST APPLICATION.

The terms of eligibility and application procedure for the AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarship are printed on the first application. Please retain a copy of these rules and regulations for your reference over the term of the application and beyond if awarded a scholarship.

IF you are a semi-finalist you will be invited to fill out the online application. For the AK STEEL SONS AND DAUGHTERS SCHOLARSHIP, completing the online (semi-finalist) application is a double submission process. Immediately, you will want to inform your counselor that you are a semi-finalist. There is a form he/she will need to fill out.
You may give your counselor the form to work on, but it is not until you have submitted the first half of the application that you will be given the online tool to invite them to upload their evaluation into the second half of your application. This is a blind submission: you send them an invitation; they upload it to your application; you will not be able to see the completed form, you will only see that the task has been completed. The counselor must complete this step before February 14 deadline. You will fill out our general application, which will filter you into all scholarships for which you are eligible through the Middletown Community Foundation. When you click “Submit Application” the first time, you will be sorted into the field of candidates for the AK STEEL SONS AND DAUGHTERS SCHOLARSHIP. At that time, you will see you need to complete and submit more information that is specific to this scholarship.

For the first part of the semi-finalist application, you will need:

  • Your transcript to be uploaded from your counselor’s office. You will send the invitation from the AwardSpring site. You will not be able to complete the initial submission until they have uploaded it, so please ask them to complete this no later than February 1.
  • Your invitation code: this is only given to candidates who have completed and mailed the first application, which must be postmarked December 31st. The first application cannot be submitted to our offices in person; it must be mailed. Employment qualifications will be checked by AK Steel. Invitation codes are only sent to top qualified applicants.
  • Print these releases, sign them and have your parents sign them, then scan them so they are ready to upload:

High School and College Records Release
Media Release

  • Have a current high resolution picture to upload; it may be used for publicity purposes. Jpeg is the preferred format, but PDF will work too.

After you click submit, the following additional items are required to complete the semi-finalist  AK STEEL SONS AND DAUGHTERS SCHOLARSHIP Application:

Answer these essay questions:

  1. Why did you choose your stated major? If undecided, please tell us in which area of interest you think you might focus. What are your future career plans?
  2. What are your goals five years from now?
  3. Describe the kind of person you think you are.
  4. The AK Steel Scholarship is designed to recognize outstanding scholarship, service and leadership. Why should you be considered for this scholarship?

You will send an invitation to your counselor at this point to upload your completed counselor’s evaluation form.

The AK STEEL SONS AND DAUGHTERS semi-finalist online application must be complete by February 14 at 11:59 PM.

How much is the AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarship worth? The scholarship is renewable and worth $20,000 ($5,000 per year over 4 years)

What are my chances of receiving an AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarship? Each year, we receive over 100 first applications for the AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarship. Children of Employees with over 1 year of service from all AK Steel divisions apply. About 100 applicants (approximately 75%) are admitted to the semi-finalist round and asked to complete the more detailed semi-finalist application online. After the deadline, the completed second applications are reviewed for academics and community involvement by three off-site judges who have college admissions experience. Each judge sends their scores for each applicant, and applicants are then ranked by cumulative score. The top twenty applicants are awarded an AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarship.

I didn’t receive my application code for the AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarship. Only top-performing students are invited to fill out the semi-finalist application. The definition of “Top-performing” changes from year to year, based on the performance level of your peer group. The only way to determine if you are one of these top-performers is to fill out the first application. After all the applications are received, we invite the top-ranking applicants of that year to fill out the more rigorous semi-finalist application. You will receive an email either inviting you to complete the second application, or telling you that we have decided not to extend an invitation. Be sure to check your “junk mail” and “clutter” if you do not receive an email at all. If you do not hear from us via email by January 15th, call our offices and ask what your status is.

When will I know if I won an AK Steel Scholarship? You will receive notice via email as soon as the judges scores are tabulated, sometime in mid to late April. Everyone is informed at the same time, via email, whether they have received a scholarship or not.

I won a scholarship! What do I need to do now? Log in to your AwardSpring account. You will see follow-up items that need completion. Only pay attention to follow up items. You do not need to complete a new application!

When will I receive my check? We pay scholarships directly to your school. It is important that you give us the correct school name, bursar’s address, and student ID # by the June 15th deadline so that we can send payment on your behalf. If you withdraw from classes, or are not enrolled, the school is required to send the unused portion of your scholarship back to us.

When I logged on to my dashboard on AwardSpring to complete my follow up items, it showed that I had an item needing completion-- which was the application! Do I need to fill out a new application? The application will periodically open to allow a new group of applicants to apply. If you have received a scholarship and are only fulfilling follow up requirements, you do not need to fill this out again.

What do I have to do to renew my AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarship? You should be looking for an email from our system on May 15th. It is imperative that you keep your email address up to date in AwardSpring. The email will provide a link to your account at AwardSpring. When you log in, you will see “Follow-up Items” that you must complete to activate your renewal payment. These items MUST be completed by June 15th. If there are submission errors, we will email you and give you a chance to correct the error when we process your renewal submission.

I completed my follow-up items. When will my scholarship be paid? All follow-up items are due June 15th, for new scholarships and renewals. On June 15th we start reading and evaluating these submissions to begin processing payment. It takes 4-5 weeks to complete this task for all our scholarships. Scholarship checks are mailed out sometime between July 22nd and August 1st. We are aware that you have a payment deadline and are doing our best to meet it.

My last semester’s grades are terrible. Do I lose my scholarship? To renew the AK Scholarship, you must write a 500 word essay based on your last year’s experience at school and submit your full year of grades. Your cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or higher to renew. If your cumulative GPA falls below, CALL US. We can hold your renewal for a semester and give you a chance to bring your grades up—BUT this does not happen automatically, you must have been in communication with us. Do not assume you have lost your scholarship. We will work with you if we can, but you must call us. You must also still complete all follow-up requirements by the deadline of June 15th.

It is after the June 15th deadline and I have decided to change schools. CONTACT US. Our course of action will depend on how much processing we have done on your scholarship.

  1. If payment has not been mailed, we can process the change will little problem, although you will be moved to the bottom of the payment list and therefore your payment will be later than other students’.
  2. If payment has been mailed, you will need to contact the bursar’s office of your old school and remind them to mail the check back to us.
  3. If it’s the middle of the school year, your school is required to send any unused portion of the scholarship back to us. You need to contact the financial aid or bursar’s office to determine what the amount of your refund will be. If you withdraw after the school’s refund date, or if the school applied the entire scholarship payment to the first semester, you may not be entitled to a refund.

Only once we have received the original check back, or the unused payment has been refunded, can we process payment to your new school.
